What is the RBOC “Call to Action”?
In the April newsletter, I mentioned the “Call to Action” while explaining the role of the Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC). But what does that actually mean?
As RBOC advocates for the rights and needs of California’s recreational boaters, there are times when they need our help. A “Call to Action” is issued to urge boaters to contact their elected representatives about key legislative issues. These calls typically occur once or twice a year, though they can happen more frequently.
We’re currently facing one of these critical moments: the Delta Conveyance Project Trailer Bills. You may not be familiar with this project, which is also known as the “Tunnel Project.” Its goal is to divert water from the Delta to Southern California. While the current plan has been revised to include just one tunnel, RBOC continues to oppose the project as it would still significantly impede navigation and negatively affect Delta recreation and agriculture. This is another massive 15–20-year project that threatens to disrupt all uses of the waterways, run over budget, and potentially never be completed. The proposed project would severely impact navigation, boating-related commerce, and Delta communities during and after construction.
How can you help as a boater?
It’s simple—contact your local representatives.
Visit RBOC.org and click on the Call to Action. There, you’ll find information about your representatives and how to reach them. Just click on their name and look for a “Contact Me” or “Send a Message” button. A short form will appear. On the same page, you’ll find a sample message you can copy and paste, or you can write your own.
Once you’ve sent your message, please email or text Linda and Gary Gordon at picya@sltwyc.com or 510-813-7815. Be sure to let them know how many emails you sent—our club receives Club of the Year points for every letter submitted.
You might be thinking, “I don’t boat in the Delta often—why should I care?” While we all use the water differently, we must stand together for all California boaters. Every state legislator will vote on this issue, and they need to hear from their constituents.
