The South Lake Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club Member Spotlight this month is our very own Rear Commodore – Samuel Robert Corso. You know… the one who writes the emails that make you chuckle and who does a fabulous job organizing our races. Because of his humorous writing skill, most of this feature is in Sam’s own words. Grab a coffee – or a beer – and enjoy the read…
Very well… where do I begin? Well, when a Mommy and a Daddy love each other very much… actually let’s fast forward. I was born and raised here in South Lake Tahoe and I plan on dying here, preferably sailing the lake while battling Poseidon. In my teen years, I worked as a mechanic at my Dad’s shop. I studied music in school and almost pursued a degree in music, until I realized that it wasn’t for me. I switched to photography and have successfully been photographing real estate for the last 11 years.
I joined the club in 2018. Dave Young recruited me, and I owe a lot of my sailing and club knowledge to him. At some point, and without my prior knowledge I might add, I was elected Rear Commodore and have been trying my best to make the races as fun and official as I can. My latest project has been to establish a full time Race Committee for the club. If any of you feel overwhelmingly inspired by my story and want to serve on Race Committee, let me know…
Sam was raised on the lake, but always on motor boats. He didn’t start sailing until one day in 2017, on which he was “at home, in the middle of a staring contest with a wall, and out of nowhere” he decided to learn how to sail. There was just something alluring and romantic about it. It was then that he purchased his first boat for $1. That was the first RED FLAG. After that, in 2018, he started to learn to race, but the Cal 25 was far too slow. He purchased a Moore 24 in 2019 and has been in love with this sport ever since!
When Sam was asked about his successes in sailing, his hobbies, etcetera, he delivered another comical answer, “Until the day I win the Tahoe Cup, the fifth place overall in the 2023 Delta Ditch is my TOP sailing accolade. It was hard fought and well earned by my Crew and I. Also, I got last place in a golf tournament once. The trophy is shaped like a toilet…”
Once again, THANK YOU Sam for all you do for SLTWYC and you’re doing a great job as our Rear Commodore!
